The Rules of Abstract

Have a free mind:
Don't feel the need to put pressure on yourself when doing abstract work. Most abstract pieces are to do with the colour and geometric shapes within the piece. Abstract is meant to be one of the more "fun" ways of creating art so don't think it has to be perfect.
- A large paint brush:
Having a large paint brush is very important, especially if working on larger scale art. My favourite way of using a large brush is blending my abstract pieces and to add layers onto the art. The one I use is a really old wall brush from a hardware shop, that my dad probably gave me!
- Mixing Media
A great thing about abstract work is that you can typically mix the media that you use in the painting. For example, using Acrylic, Oil pastels and Spray paint can be a great way to mix your medias. However be careful when mixing Oil paint as this is not water based and can be very hard to mould with other mediums.
- A palette knife
One of my all time favourite things to use to create abstract pieces. This is where texture and dimension will start to show in the art and if you are including 'abstractism' pieces this is something that will make the subject stand out and not get lost in the background abstract work.
- Know when to stop:
Something a lot of artist struggle with, is to know when to stop. As fun as the art technique is seeming to be, it is always good to be mindful of when it can get 'too much'. As art is typically an open opinion, knowing when to stop will help your art not get messy and too much for the eye.
